When should my child start swimming lessons?

There's no single right age — but there is a right approach for every stage. Here's how we think about it.

Parents often ask us whether their child is 'old enough' to start proper swimming lessons. The honest answer is that most children from age 4 upwards can begin structured lessons — provided the environment is warm, calm and genuinely tailored to them.

In a private heated pool, a nervous three-year-old can build water confidence at their own pace, without the noise and echo of a public leisure centre. By age 5 or 6, most children are ready to start working on real technique — kicking, breathing and the first strokes.

The single biggest predictor of progress is not age. It's consistency and the quality of attention in each lesson. Weekly 1-to-1 lessons will always beat sporadic group sessions.
